Overview

An Area of Rescue Assistance (also referred to as an Area of Refuge) is a designated location where individuals who cannot navigate stairs independently during an evacuation can wait safely for emergency responder assistance.

These areas are equipped with two-way emergency communication call boxes that connect directly to Public Safety or emergency responders, ensuring clear communication throughout an incident.

  1. Proceed to the Area: Go directly to the nearest designated Area of Rescue Assistance.

  2. Activate the Call Box: Press the emergency button on the two-way communication panel.

  3. Report Your Position: State your name, exact location, and any specific assistance or medical needs to the dispatcher.

  4. Await Assistance: Remain in the protected enclosure until Public Safety officers or local fire department personnel arrive to assist you.

Important Note for Instructors and Managers: Instructors and Managers should confirm the location of any individuals remaining in an Area of Rescue Assistance and notify responding officers or Public Safety immediately upon exiting the building.
