Lane Community College Naloxone Memo
Purpose:
To prevent opiate-related overdose deaths by making naloxone available on campus. Naloxone, commonly known as Narcan, is a medication that reverses the effects of opiate-related drug overdose. Consistent with Oregon law, Lane Community College (LCC) has set forth the authorization for employees of LCC to administer naloxone in order to respond to a suspected drug overdose occurring on campus.
Application:
All Health Clinic and Public Safety employees will be trained in naloxone administration in accordance with the Oregon Health Authority (OHA). Additionally, trainings in naloxone administration will be offered at LCC that will be open to the campus community. Employees will be strongly encouraged to attend. Attending in-person training will be encouraged but an alternative training format will be provided through an online video. In the event of an opiate drug overdose, if a trained responder is present, then they should be the one to administer the naloxone. However, in order not to delay life-saving medication, any college member may be the first responder and is authorized to administer naloxone in accordance with Oregon’s Good Samaritan Law. Naloxone will be located in the Health Clinic, Public Safety, and alongside as many automatic external defibrillators (AEDs) as possible.
