LMS Advisory Team

LMS Advisory Team

The college assembled an 18-member advisory team — including faculty, management, staff, students, and representatives from LCCEA and LCCEF — to determine which Learning Management System (LMS) they believe best fits the college's teaching and learning needs. Formalized on December 16, 2024, this team has concluded their research to inform a recommendation of whether LaneCC should remain with a Moodle based platform (ie. MoodleUS) or transition to Canvas.

The LMS Advisory Team has completed its charge and formally recommends that Lane Community College transition to the Canvas LMS platform.

Feedback Gathering

Feedback was gathered in a multitude of ways:

  • There were two faculty focused surveys — one for each platform. Information collected helped inform the teams recommendations. The survey consisted of 12-14 mostly multiple choice questions. All responses were anonymous. No personally identifiable information was saved along with individual responses. Surveys were collected over ~30 days (opened April 3 | closed May 5) and were promoted via vendor demos, LaneWeekly, division meetings, multiple emails & reminders, as well as an in-person round-table Spring Conference session.
  • Student feedback was collected from Spring 2025 term students. Consisting of 4-6 questions, it was highly successful (~15% response rate) in collecting feedback from students about their current experience and expectations in both platforms. Surveys were collected over ~12 days (Opened: April, 21 | Closed: May 2) and were promoted directly within Moodle via the home page, MyCourses, and calendar/task dashboards.
  • Additional feedback was collected via email from key staff, administrators, IT, and systems personnel.

FAQ

Are we switching now?

There are no concrete agreements in place to move to Canvas at this time. The LMS Advisory team has concluded evaluating whether or not to recommend the switch to Canvas, or to remain with Moodle under a different hosting provider (MoodleUS vs. OpenLMS). While the team's recommendation is that the college makes its shift to Canvas, whether or not we're transitioning will be determined in a negotiation between the College, Faculty Union (LCCEA), and Academic Technology Department.
