Using Credit Hours to Describe Annual Workloads

Many departments define faculty workloads with reference to the number of credit hours taught. This is typical for lecture classes such as English and Social Science courses. The calculation of overload can also be based upon a combination of lecture and lab credits using the TLC calculation outlined in Workload: Faculty.  This is typical for Dental and Science courses.

Among the departments using the credit hour standard, the annual full-time workload standard is variable. The annual workload standard can also vary from discipline to discipline within a department or be based upon a combination of lecture and lab credits.  If you don't know which standard is used in your department or division, check with your division or department chair.

Examples:

  • In a department with an annual department workload of 45 credits, a 3-credit hour, one- term assignment results in an overload FTE of 3/45 or .067 FTE.
  • In a department with an annual department workload of 36 credits, a 3-credit hour, one- term assignment results in an overload FTE of 3/36 or .083 FTE.
  • In a department with an annual department workload of 45 credits, a one-term lab class assignment worth 3 teaching load credits, (1 TLC = .682 credits) results in an overload FTE of 3 X .682/45 or .046 FTE.
