Voluntary Life Insurance

Voluntary life insurance coverage is available for part-time faculty who would like added financial protection for themselves and their families. Voluntary coverage is employee-paid through post-tax payroll deductions.

Who can be covered?

Employee, spouse/domestic partner, and eligible dependent children.

When can I enroll?

Newly eligible employees have 31 days from their date of initial eligibility to enroll. Additional opportunities are available during open enrollment or with evidence of insurability, as applicable.

Guarantee Issue Amounts

Coverage up to certain guarantee issue amounts may be available during the initial enrollment period without answering health-related questions.

  • Employee - up to $200,000 in $10,000 increments
  • Spouse/Domestic Partner - up to $30,000 in $10,000 increments
  • Dependent Child - see current plan information

During the annual open enrollment period, employees with existing coverage may increase their employee coverage by up to $20,000 per year, up to the guarantee issue amount, without answering health-related questions. Coverage may also be decreased during open enrollment. First-time enrollment outside of the initial eligibility period or coverage above the guarantee issue amount requires completion of a health-related questionnaire, which is provided by the insurance carrier at the time of application.

Cost

Premiums are based on age and tobacco status and change in five-year age bands.

When Coverage Ends

Portability and conversion options may be available when eligibility for coverage ends. Portability is available to employees who are under age 65 when coverage ends, regardless of the reason coverage is ending, and who have been enrolled in the benefit for at least 12 months. Conversion is available to employees who do not meet the requirements for portability. Applications for either portability or conversion must be submitted within 31 days of the coverage end date. Refer to The Standard's plan information for eligibility requirements and additional details.

Voluntary Accidental Death & Dismemberment Insurance

Accidental Death & Dismemberment (AD&D) coverage is available for part-time faculty who would like added financial protection for themselves and their families. Enrollment is voluntary, and premiums are paid entirely by the employee through post-tax payroll deductions.

Who can be covered?

Employee, spouse/domestic partner, and eligible dependent children.

When can I enroll?

Newly eligible employees have 31 days from their date of initial eligibility to enroll. Additional opportunities are available during open enrollment.

Coverage Options
  • Employee and spouse/domestic partner - coverage in $10,000 increments, up to a maximum benefit of $500,000
  • Dependent children - coverage in $2,000 increments, up to a maximum benefit of $10,000

During the annual open enrollment period, employees may add, increase, or decrease voluntary AD&D coverage. Health-related questions are not required for the AD&D benefit.

Cost

Voluntary AD&D premiums are based on a flat rate per $10,000 of coverage.

When Coverage Ends

Portability and conversion options are available when eligibility for coverage ends. Portability is available to employees who are under age 65 when coverage ends, regardless of the reason coverage is ending, and who have been enrolled in the benefit for at least 12 months. Portability is not an option for the employee's insured spouse/domestic partner and/or insured dependent children. For those not eligible for portability, conversion is an option. Application for portability or conversion must be made within 31 days of the coverage end date. Refer to The Standard's plan information for eligibility requirements and additional details.
