Contracted Faculty FTE

FTE (full-time equivalency) is the ratio between an employee's assignment and the full-time standard.

In general, the full-time standard is defined in terms of work days in the teaching year and teaching workload (credit hours or contact hours).

Many full-time credit instructors have a teaching year of 170 days and a teaching workload of 45 credits.  Although all full-time faculty work a 170-day teaching year, not all departments have a full-time teaching load standard of 45 credits.  (In departments where 45 credits is not the full-time teaching load, a different standard has been defined and communicated to staff.)

Example:  A full-time workload for Health/Physical Education instructors teaching PE activity classes is 21 credits per year.  A PE activity class instructor who is assigned to teach 21 credits over a 170-day academic year is considered a full-time (1.0 FTE) instructor.

To calculate FTE, ratios need to be established between

  1. the days in the employee's teaching year and the 170-day full-time standard
    and
  2. the employee's teaching workload and the department full-time workload standard.

These ratios (or percentages) are multiplied by each other to arrive at the FTE.

Example: An employee is assigned to teach 36 credits over a standard 170-day teaching year.  The full-time teaching load standard in the department is 36 credits.  (36 credits/36 credits x 170 days/170 days = 1.0 FTE)

Example: An employee is hired after the beginning of fall term and assigned to teach 36 credits over a 160-day period.  The full-time teaching load standard in the department is 36 credits.  (36 credits/36 credits x 160 days/170 days = .941 FTE)

Example: An employee is assigned to teach 28 credits over a standard 170-day teaching year.  The full-time teaching load standard in the department is 36 credits.  (28 credits/36 credits x 170 days/170 days = .778 FTE)

Example: An employee is hired after the beginning of fall term and assigned to teach 28 credits over a 160-day period.  The full-time teaching load standard in the department is 36 credits.  (28 credits/36 credits x 160 days/170 days = .732 FTE
