General Characteristics:
A Lead KLCC Program Host is responsible for producing a daily program, including editorial oversight, and improving the Station's programming in the area of specialization; prepares for and conducts on-air programs; participates in on-air fundraising; does related work as required. Operating on-air broadcast equipment requires manual dexterity. Light lifting is required to move stacks of CDs or tapes. Working conditions may include working in a cramped area.

Examples of Work:
Performs the duties of program host and leads the work of program hosts in one or more of the program areas such as music, news or informational interviews.

Maintains and expands the music library for KLCC by entering new recordings in the database, designing storage space for easy access by announcers, replacing or repairing old recordings and maintaining library integrity; procures music recordings for use on KLCC by interaction with record industry representatives; reports to national record industry trade magazines by analyzing play reports of on-air announcers; designs, implements and coordinates campaigns related to on and off air promotion efforts by planning strategy, assigning tasks and completing production for use on the campaigns; publishes weekly playlist for the information of the record industry in order to maintain complimentary record/CD service to the Station; plans and conducts interviews with music artists who are performing in the area; maintains a good relationship with local record/CD retail outlets.

Oversees editorial content and supervises story assignments for all news and public affairs programs; develops and maintains contact with other news rooms; cultivates new sources of news and information; participates in national and regional programming decisions; exchanges information and stories; maintains wire service; coordinates special events coverage.

Responds to listener inquiries and complaints about programming; recommends and implements computer software systems and appropriateupgrades; represents the Station at various functions.

Plans and implements overall Station programming policy in collaboration with station manager, program coordinator and co-workers; analyzes audience data, Station mission and fundraising potential.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of and skill in applying on-air broadcast techniques; knowledge of and skill in the operation of on-air equipment; knowledge of music trends and/or current events as required by the position; knowledge of and skill in the application of FCC rules and other legal requirements such as libel and slander laws; skill in the operation of audio production equipment; skill in the operation of a microcomputer; skill in speaking in a clear and well-modulated voice; skill in leading and training students and volunteers; skill in editing; ability to effectively interact with outside organizations and individuals concerning the speciality area; ability to initiate programming proposals relating to the area of specialization; ability to develop and improve on the programming in the area of specialization; ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; ability to work independently and as part of a team; ability to use wordprocessing to compose or edit materials for broadcast; ability to effectively direct and coordinate the activities of assigned staff, student assistants and volunteers; ability to plan work assignments and set priorities; ability to understand and interpret audience data; ability to conduct an effective radio interview; ability to direct Station promotional efforts for maximum results; ability to perform light lifting and work in a cramped area; ability to work occasional varied shifts and/or weekends; ability to work safely.

Supervision:
Works under the general supervision of the KLCC-FM Station Manager. A KLCC Program Coordinator is available to assign work, provide work priorities and troubleshoot problems on a daily basis. Broadcasting work is performed independently in conformance with FCC regulations and the policies and procedures of the Station. Work involving development or improvement of the program assigned is reviewed and discussed with the program coordinator and station manager. Performance is reviewed for the quality of on-air programming and the development and improvement of the program assigned.

This position coordinates and leads the work of KLCC Program Hosts, student assistants and volunteers.

This position plans and assigns work, establishes work priorities and is available to answer questions or troubleshoot problems on a daily basis.

Minimum Qualifications:
High school graduation or equivalent supplemented by course work or training in communications, music, broadcast journalism, broadcasting, FCC rules and regulations pertaining to broadcasting and station operations and the use of audio-production equipment is required. Two years of on-air experience in the area of specialization is required. A current FCC Restricted Radiotelephone Operator Permit is required.

Equivalent combination of training and experience will be considered qualifying.
