The Commission on AI helps connect Lane’s community with guidance, professional learning, and recommendations about responsible AI use.
AI and academic integrity
In May 2026, the commission’s governance workgroup and the Fusion Lab shared faculty guidance recommending against using AI detection tools as the sole basis for academic integrity action. The guidance also included syllabus AI policy language.
Students should follow the AI expectations provided for each course and assignment and ask their instructor when expectations are unclear. Faculty can contact Kevin Steeves for the guidance shared in May.
Employee AI use policy recommendations
The commission recommended development of an institutional employee AI use policy addressing privacy, transparency, ethical use, and human judgment. The annual report records a first College Council read on June 10, 2026.

AI literacy and professional learning
CAI is working toward a shared understanding of AI literacy: understanding AI tools, using them thoughtfully, and critically evaluating their outputs and impacts. Current work considers bias, limitations, privacy, intellectual property, environmental impacts, and human responsibility.
The commission collaborates with the Academic Technology Center, Center for Teaching and Learning, Fusion Lab, Library, Information Technology, Human Resources, Student Affairs, and other campus partners to connect learning needs with resources.
A shared literacy definition and an institutional learning outcome are under consideration. These proposals are not presented here as adopted requirements.
