Commission on Artificial Intelligence (CAI)
Purpose
The Commission on Artificial Intelligence (CAI) serves in an advisory capacity to the President on the evolving impacts of artificial intelligence on the student experience and the institution. The Commission monitors developments in AI, assesses their relevance to Lane Community College, and supports institutional dialogue through information sharing, education, and communication with multiple groups on campus. Decisions regarding policy, implementation, and operations remain within established governance and administrative processes.
The creation of this advisory group grew out of the President’s Task Force on AI, which was founded in 2023 and completed its charge in spring 2025. The Task Force’s work culminated in a Final AITF Report and Recommendations. The CAI uses the AITF recommendations as a guiding framework for its work and serves as a campus-wide advisory body on AI adoption and use.
Scope
The Commission will:
- Operate under presidential sponsorship, with executive coordination through the Division Dean of Academic Support and Innovation within Academic Affairs.
- Monitor emerging AI trends and evaluate their potential impact on the College and its students.
- Provide regular updates on AI trends and opportunities in the Lane Weekly
- Advise the President on the adoption, use, and impact of AI.
- Provide a structured forum for AI-related questions, proposals, or emerging issues and develop advisory recommendations for presidential consideration.
- Collaborate with the Academic Technology Center, Informational Technology, Library, Human Resources, Center for Teaching and Learning, the Fusion Lab, Student Affairs and other functional areas to share information and resources that support campus-wide AI literacy.
- Provide quarterly updates and recommendations to the President, including a review of prior AI Task Force recommendations and emerging considerations.
- Arrange no fewer than two meetings with the President per year
Membership
The Commission will:
- Be comprised of representatives across campus, similar to the composition of the AI Taskforce, with equal representatives from managers, faculty, classified staff, and students.
- Be co-chaired by a manager (e.g. Dean of Academic Support and Innovation) and a faculty or classified staff member.
