Margaret Robertson was a heavy equipment designer during the first half of her career, where her primary work involved designing and drafting portable rock-crushing plants. She also documented technical details of historic horsedrawn vehicles, was a welder, and worked in truck bed design, truck scales, and trade show exhibits. In addition to design and drafting, her responsibilities at times included technical writing, technical illustration, and setting up document-control and production-control (MRP) systems.
Margaret’s emphasis shifted to landscape architecture and sustainability during the second half of her career. She has bachelor of landscape architecture (BLA) and master of landscape architecture (MLA) degrees from the University of Oregon, with a focus on campus planning. She is a member of the American Society of Landscape Architects.
Margaret’s primary research focus is sustainability. She is the author of a widely used textbook, Sustainability Principles and Practice, now in its 3rd edition, and two other books, Communicating Sustainability and a Dictionary of Sustainability.
Her other interests include universal design for people of all abilities, including visible and invisible disabilities. In addition to sustainability, her current research deals with wayfinding and design for people with visual impairment.
