This lesson plan by Doug Young at LCC integrates a real-world climate chemistry application (the catalytic reduction of CO2 to acetaldehyde using a copper catalyst) into a standard General Chemistry curriculum (CH 221-223). Rather than teaching stoichiometry, thermodynamics, electrochemistry, and catalysis through abstract examples, students learn those same concepts through the lens of cutting-edge carbon capture research. The module includes three tiered assessment options, from foundational calculations to a comprehensive multi-concept application activity, and maps to LCC's institutional learning outcomes.
