Students must understand the services available to them, their rights and responsibilities, and the processes available to address concerns. This procedure explains:
- student responsibility for tuition and fees regardless of class attendance,
- the process for students to drop or withdraw from classes,
- faculty guidelines for administratively dropping students, and
- the circumstances under which the College may administratively drop a student.
Student Responsibility for Registration, Tuition, and Fees
It is the responsibility of the student to register for any course they wish to attend. Students may not ask an instructor to hold a place in a class or reserve a space for them.
Once a student registers for a course, it is the student’s responsibility:
- To pay tuition and fees regardless of class attendance.
If a student decides that they will not be taking a course or courses, it is the student’s responsibility to:
- use Lane’s registration system to drop any courses by the established refund deadline in order to receive a full refund of paid tuition or remission of indebtedness if tuition has not been paid, and avoid academic history being recorded and transcripted.
Refund deadlines are published on the Schedule Changes and Grading Important Dates.
“No Show” Drop for Non-Attendance
Students who do not attend at least one class session during the first week of the term will be administratively dropped through the No Show Drop process. For online courses, attendance is defined as participation in at least one required course activity.
Instructors will report students who do not attend at least one class session, or who do not participate in a required online course activity during the first week of the term. These reports must be submitted by the published No Show Drop reporting deadlines.
It remains the student’s responsibility to drop any class they do not plan to attend before the established refund deadline, even when instructors report non-attendance. Unless a class is officially canceled, students remain responsible for tuition and fees for all courses in which they are registered/enrolled.
Students must attend at least one class session, or complete an online participation activity, to avoid being No Show Dropped.
Students may request a review of a No Show Drop within 30 days after end of term grades are posted by contacting the department responsible for the course.
Drop for Prerequisites Not Met
Students enrolled in courses for which they do not meet prerequisite requirements, such as required skills, placement scores, or prior coursework, may be administratively dropped either prior to the start of the term or after grades are posted for the previous term.
Drop for Non-Payment
The College reserves the right to administratively drop a student from their courses for the following reasons:
- a payment made by check is returned by the bank for insufficient funds or other reasons, or
- a payment made using a credit card is subsequently rejected by the bank, or if
- a student's prior term balance is not paid by the payment deadline, they may be dropped from courses in future terms.
Refunds and Withdrawal
Any refund of tuition is determined by the official date a student drops using the registration system. Students who withdraw after the posted drop deadline, do not receive a refund. Students are academically and financially responsible for all courses in which they remain enrolled. When a student withdraws from a course after the refund deadline, a W (withdrawal) will be recorded on the student’s transcript.
Drop: A drop is defined as the removal of a student's registration from a course during the refund period. A drop can be initiated by the student using Lane's registration system, or by the institution. Courses that are dropped are not recorded in the student’s academic history and do not result in tuition charges.
Withdrawal (W): A withdrawal is defined as the removal of a student's registration from a course after the refund period. A withdrawal can be initiated by the student using Lane's registration system, or in rare cases, the institution. When a student is withdrawn from a course, it is recorded on the student’s transcript with a W. A withdrawal does not remove student financial responsibility for the course; tuition is assessed and charged, and the student is financially obligated to pay tuition for that course.
