What can CETs do?

  • Support student learning: CETs support student learning by guiding students through course content, facilitating discussions or one-on-one sessions, or providing feedback to help them understand assignments and key concepts. They can also share (or even create) course-specific resources and offer ungraded practice activities. (Just to name a few ideas.)
  • Support student success: CETs can help students develop skills beyond course content, such as time management, self-advocacy, confidence, navigating course materials, and the learning environment of the course. They also connect students to campus resources and foster a sense of belonging.
  • Act as a bridge between instructor and student: Communicates with the instructor about course content and student experiences, including sharing any challenges students might be experiencing.

What can’t CETs do?

  • Lead the Class: Tutors may not teach in place of the instructor, including covering classes during the instructor’s absence.
  • Grade: Tutors are not permitted to grade any assignments, create graded materials, input grades or participate in grade-related decisions.
  • Classroom Management: Tutors should not enforce discipline, take attendance, or manage student conduct.
  • Act as a Teaching Assistant: Tutors may not prepare lessons, run errands, make copies, or complete administrative tasks for instructors.

Can I recommend a student as a tutor?

Yes! Faculty recommendations are encouraged and part of the hiring process.

All student tutors (including course embedded tutors) must meet the following requirements:

  • Have an A or B in any subject they will be providing support in (or have passed in non-credit courses like ESL or GED).
  • Provide two instructor references.
  • Complete an application, interview, and training process.
  • Be enrolled in at least 6 credit hours (or the non-credit equivalent) during the terms they plan to work

Note: The process may take over a month, and hiring depends on department needs. Faculty can recommend a student on the request form, or the student can email tutoring@lanecc.edu.

Can you guarantee I will be paired with a course embedded tutor?

No. Submitting a request does not guarantee a tutor pairing. If we cannot assign a tutor, we’ll work with you to find alternative ways to support your students.
