Safety: Safety Data Sheets & Hazard Communication

The Hazard Communication Standard (HCS) (29 CFR 1910.1200(g)), revised in 2012, requires that the chemical manufacturer, distributor, or importer provide Safety Data Sheets (SDSs) (formerly MSDSs or Material Safety Data Sheets) for each hazardous chemical to downstream users to communicate information on these hazards. NOTE: in case of power or website outage, a thumb drive containing a backup of the Division's safety data sheets can be found at the following locations and inserted into a battery operated device:

  • Science Division Office: Bldg. 16 / Room 166B, stored with Division keys
  • Chemical Hygiene Officer's office: Bldg. 16 / Rm 123, hanging on the wall next to desk

  • PubChem is maintained by the National Library of Medicine
  • Find authoritative chemical safety information available in their Laboratory Chemical Safety Summary (LCSS) Datasheets.
  • The PubChem LCSS can be used to supplement information from a manufacturer SDS or help resolve conflicting data from multiple sources.
