Putty is a free and open-source terminal emulator, network file transfer application, and serial console for Windows platforms. Installation files, FAQs, and other documentation can be found on the PuTTY website. More detailed installation instructions can be found on the SSH Academy website.

Once PuTTY is installed and opened, here are instructions for adding a server.

  1. On the left hand side in "Category", you should have defaulted to "Session".
  2. On the right hand side, in the Host Name (or IP address), enter "citstudent.lanecc.edu" (without quotes).
  3. Make sure the Connection Type is set to "SSH".
  4. In the section labeled "Port", enter "22" (without quotes).
  5. In Saved Sessions, enter "citstudent" (without quotes).
  6. On the right hand side of the box, click Save. You should now see "citstudent" in the list.
  7. At the bottom, click Open.
  8. You should see a new box named "citstudent.lanecc.net – PuTTY" and inside that box should be "login as:".
  9. The User will be your last name and the first initial of your first name with the last 3 of your L number.
  10. "user@citstudent.lanecc.edu’s password:" should come up ("user" being what you just entered). The password will be provided by your instructor.

Please visit the CIT Lab, (building 19, room 135) if you are having problems with user/password credentials.
